    OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The project seeks to provide Internet access for Indigenous Shuar people in three communities in the Alto Nangaritza region of the Ecuadorian Amazon by implementing a solar-powered telecommunications tower to relay Internet connectivity through point-to-point technology.

The project will provide stable and affordable Internet access so that communities can access and share valuable information on health, education, and participate in decision-making. The project also aims to provide a proof of concept to the Ecuadorian Government on how to implement recently passed legislation for the functioning of community networks as a viable option to bridge the digital divide in the country.

The project  will also equip the communities with equipment so that community members can attend remote trainings to support their education, communication, conservation and overall territorial protection.

    WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?

The three communities in the Alto Nangaritza region lack connection to the nearby telecommunication tower due to their geographical location between mountains.

Currently, these communities have potential access to the point-to-point connection installed in the Yawi community as well as satellite connections provided by HughesNet. Still, to access unlimited-data Wifi in Yawi, people from the communities would have to travel by motorboat to a hotspot, which makes unlimited Internet connectivity effectively inaccessible for the people living in these communities.

The Mura Nunka Association needs access to the Internet as it is located in a highly biodiverse area, surrounded by significant biodiversity reserves. In order to facilitate participatory processes for a multitude of regional systems and economic practices, as well to connect local students to remote education opportunities, connectivity is paramount.

    The Internet is for Everyone

The Internet Society Foundation supports the vision of the Internet Society and its work for an open, globally-connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet for everyone.
