    OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of the project is to sustain the transition of the administrative and technical operations of .LB ccTLD to the ISOC Lebanon Chapter and update the delegation record for .LB at IANA. The .LB Domain Names Registry ccTLD was created in 1993 by the late Nabil Bukhaled, Internet Society Hall of Fame inductee.  In January 2023, Nabil Bukhaled passed away and a process was launched to transfer the management of .LB to the Internet society Lebanon Chapter.

    WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?

This project ensures the continuity and sustainability of the.LB operation. ISOC Lebanon will create a volunteering group to step in and guarantee the smooth continuity of the .LB operation by taking over the management and the operation of the .LB registry/registrar system. Once IANA transfers the .lb registry to the ISOC Chapter, the operations can become sustainable, being run smoothly by the ISOC Lebanon Chapter without the need for external support as in the past.

This .LB redelegation project positions ISOC Lebanon as a major stakeholder regarding the Internet in Lebanon, which is key to ensuring the continuity of the operations, and getting support from the government and the local Internet and tech community. This also strengthens  ISOC’s global reputation and position with one more ISOC chapter in the world managing their respective country’s ccTLD.
