    OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The project addresses the current unreliability of the eduroam service in Uganda, caused by dependence on rented Wi-Fi infrastructure. The project aims to establish a fully owned and managed Wi-Fi network utilizing solar-powered mesh routers assembled in Uganda. This will allow to reboot the eduroam service in previously disconnected areas and expand access points in others. The target beneficiaries include students, researchers, and staff across educational institutions (pre-primary to university) throughout Uganda.

    WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?

By establishing their own infrastructure, the project can ensure consistent and readily available Wi-Fi connectivity, facilitating online learning, research activities, and communication. The project also promotes sustainability through the use of solar-powered mesh routers, which reduces reliance on traditional electricity grids and lowers operational costs. Local assembly of the routers fosters knowledge transfer and technical expertise within Uganda, contributing to long-term project sustainability and local capacity building. Finally, by expanding access points and rebooting the service in previously disconnected areas, the project aims to reach a wider range of students, researchers, and staff, fostering greater participation in the digital learning and research landscape.
