    Meet Our 2024 Research Grantees: Shaping the Future of the Internet 

    Our Research Grant Program supports global initiatives that enhance our understanding of the Internet and its importance to everyone. We are thrilled to announce the 2024 cohort of grant partners who will conduct innovative studies addressing the Internet’s critical challenges while also contributing to its sustainability and inclusivity. 

    This year’s 12 selected projects from six countries will employ innovative approaches to addressing Internet-related challenges through the program’s core themes: a Trustworthy Internet, Decolonizing the Internet, Greening the Internet, and the Internet Economy. 

    “The Internet Society Foundation remains committed to empowering researchers worldwide to investigate pressing issues shaping the Internet’s future,” said Maiko Nakagaki, Senior Program Officer of the Internet Society Foundation. “The researchers we support generate practical knowledge to address critical challenges, such as personal data protection, the gender digital divide, and the preservation of Indigenous languages, among other pressing topics. We are proud of their work and its tangible impact on public policy and industry decisions.”

    Decolonizing the Internet

    Arizona State University – USA – USD $460,000 
    Project: Internet for all Native Americans 

    Western Sydney University – Australia – USD $474,887 
    Project: Decolonising digital design: Towards safe and inclusive digital experiences for children and young people 

    Greening the Internet 

    University of California, Berkeley – USA – USD $499,999 
    Project: Greening the Internet: Transforming Useful Research into Used Outcomes 

    German Informatics Society – Germany – USD $349,994 
    Project: Unlocking the Potential of Green Coding into Practice 

    Ellen Strickland – New Zealand – USD $199,842 
    Project: Internet Infrastructure Climate Resilience Coalition: Action research in Aotearoa, New Zealand 

    TechSoup Global in partnership with Tamara Kneese – USA – USD $200,000 
    Project: Greening through collective action: Assessing the Internet’s environmental impacts with participatory methods 

    An Internet Economy 

    TEDIC – Paraguay – USD $345,000 
    Project: Ensuring fair work standards in the digital realm: A multi-faceted approach in South America 

    TechSoup Global in partnership with PersonalData.IO – Switzerland – USD $495,000 
    Project: Decoding Algorithmic Management for Platform Workers’ Calculative Power 

    A Trustworthy Internet 

    Internet Security Research Group – USA – USD $350,000 
    Project: Building Divvi Up, a System for Privacy-Preserving Metrics Collection 

    Georgia Institute of Technology – USA – USD $350,000 
    Project: Governing Identity Online: Nations and Technologists Defining Who’s Who? 

    Code for Science & Society in partnership with Distributed AI Research Institute – USA – USD $500,000 
    Project: Community-Centered Sovereign Language Technologies for Online Knowledge Repositories
