Applications Open for the Sustainable Peering Infrastructure Grant Program
The Internet Society and the Internet Society Foundation are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Sustainable Peering Infrastructure (SPI) grant program, which supports organizations worldwide in strengthening local Internet infrastructure and connectivity.
Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) play a critical role in keeping traffic local, improving performance, and lowering the cost of connectivity for users and networks. In line with our 2030 Strategy to advance affordable and reliable access, the SPI grant program supports community-led interconnection infrastructure that enhances these benefits in underserved and developing regions. This year’s grant program will focus on projects in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), though organizations worldwide are encouraged to apply.
The SPI grant program funds projects that improve Internet performance by reducing reliance on expensive international transit, supports the establishment and sustainability of IXPs where they are most needed, and strengthens the broader peering and interconnection ecosystem through capacity building and community support.
The Internet Society emphasizes the importance of the program by stating: “The Sustainable Peering Infrastructure Grant Program empowers communities to build the backbone of a more affordable, reliable, and locally rooted Internet,” said Michuki Mwangi, Distinguished Technologist – Internet Growth, at the Internet Society. “By supporting community-led Internet Exchange Points and peering initiatives, we’re helping reduce dependency on costly international transit, strengthen local digital ecosystems, and bring tangible improvements to connectivity where it’s needed most.”
The grant program offers two types of funding, depending on each project’s needs:
– IXP Support funding up to USD $50,000 for projects that help establish new Internet Exchange Points or enhance existing ones, helping them reach their full potential within the local Internet ecosystem;
– Peering Ecosystem Support funding up to USD $25,000 for projects that strengthen the broader peering community through events, workshops, or network-building activities.
Applications will be open from 3 March 2026 until 21:00 UTC on 23 April 2026 and must be submitted through the Foundation’s grant management platform (Fluxx), in English, French, or Spanish.
If your organization is launching a local IXP, scaling an existing one, or strengthening your region’s peering ecosystem, the SPI grant program is an opportunity to secure funding and support for your vision. This initiative is part of the Internet Society and the Internet Society Foundation’s ongoing commitment to building a more affordable, reliable, and resilient Internet for everyone.
