    OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The objective of the project is to convene and train community-based organizations from environmentally vulnerable and under-resourced communities on building and utilizing the Portable Network Kit (consisting of hardware and software housed in a waterproof, battery-powered, solar-enabled kit) for disaster preparedness and post-disaster connectivity. By focusing on technology, training, and relationship building, the project aims to leverage local resources and existing social connections to create a community of practice. This initiative will bridge the gap between the physical infrastructure of the Internet and the human infrastructure of relationships, enhancing community resilience and connectivity in times of crisis.

    WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?

The project addresses the disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis on low-income and environmentally vulnerable communities, which often lack reliable and affordable Internet access. By providing these communities with the knowledge and tools to build and maintain Portable Network Kits, the project ensures that they can establish autonomous communication systems during disasters, when connectivity is most critical. Additionally, the project empowers communities to take control of their own communications infrastructure, fostering self-reliance and resilience. Through training and the creation of a support network, the initiative promotes sustainable and locally governed internet connectivity, essential for effective disaster response and recovery.
