Objective of the Project
The project developed two prototypes: the SOLE Lab, a sustainable, internet-supported learning space designed for self-organized education and community empowerment, and SOLE Voltaje, an open-source guide to help communities find suitable solutions for enhancing internet connectivity. The SOLE Lab prototype expanded through ongoing monitoring, community engagement, and the construction of two new labs in rural and urban settings to refine the design and infrastructure. SOLE Voltaje improved through user testing, new interface development (including WhatsApp and offline versions), and evaluation of its impact on enhancing Internet access.
Why is this Project Important?
This initiative is vital because it empowers marginalized communities—like the Wayuu in La Guajira—to utilize the internet for learning, collaboration, and self-governance, fostering long-term digital and social inclusion. By creating accessible tools and spaces for self-managed learning and localized internet connectivity, it addresses systemic gaps in education and technological infrastructure. The project also builds a community of users and innovators who co-develop sustainable, adaptable solutions that can be replicated globally, promoting equity and digital empowerment.
